Step 1: Gather Materials

  • Collect all your materials, and if you’re using a bead organizer, sort your beads into it. This makes it easier to see all your options and access them as you design.

Step 2: Measure and Cut the Cord

  • Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure the elastic cord. A good rule of thumb is to measure the wrist and then add about 4 inches extra to this measurement; this extra length is for tying the knot and adjusting the bracelet.

  • Cut the cord with scissors.

Step 3: Prep the Cord for Threading

  • If the end of the elastic frays, use a lighter to gently melt the tip, making it easier to thread through the beads. Be careful not to burn the elastic or yourself.

  • Optionally, you can also add a small piece of tape at the end to prevent fraying and to make a needle-like end for easier threading.

Step 4: Start Threading Beads

  • Begin threading your beads onto the elastic cord. You can create a pattern or go for a random design. Slide each bead down to the base of the cord.

  • Continue adding beads until the bracelet is approximately the length of your wrist. Remember to frequently check the fit by wrapping the beaded section around your wrist to ensure it’s not too tight or too loose.

Step 5: Check the Design

  • Once all beads are on the cord, lay out the bracelet on a flat surface to check the design. Make sure you are happy with the bead pattern and the overall look.

Step 6: Tie Off the Bracelet

  • To secure the bracelet, tie a surgeon’s knot. To do this, make a regular overhand knot, then pass the end of the cord through the loop again. Pull tight to secure.

  • Tie another overhand knot on top for added security.

Step 7: Hide the Knot

  • To hide the knot, you can thread the ends of the cord back through a few beads on either side of the knot if possible. This helps conceal the knot and ensures a neat finish.

Step 8: Trim Excess Cord

  • Once the knot is secure and hidden, trim any excess cord close to the beads.

Step 9: Final Adjustments

  • Gently stretch the bracelet a bit to ensure the knots tighten fully and that the elastic settles comfortably around the beads.

Step 10: Wear or Gift Your Bracelet

  • Your beaded bracelet is now ready to wear or give as a thoughtful handmade gift. Enjoy your creation or see the joy it brings to someone else!
