With just a few materials, your little ones can create a delightful array of butterflies that can be used as decorations, gifts, or even educational tools. Follow these easy steps to make your own coffee filter butterflies.

Materials Needed:

  • White coffee filters

  • Washable markers in various colors

  • Water spray bottle

  • Pipe cleaners (preferably in bright or metallic colors)

  • Newspaper or a plastic tablecloth (for protecting surfaces)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Color Your Filters: Flatten the coffee filters on your protected surface, and let the kids color them with markers. Encourage them to fill in as much white space as possible for vibrant results.

  2. Spray to Blend: Lightly spray the colored filters with water from the spray bottle. Watch as the colors blend into each other creating a beautiful tie-dye effect. Use just enough water to dampen the filters but not soak them.

  3. Dry the Filters: Allow the filters to dry completely. You can lay them out flat or hang them up to speed up the drying process.

  4. Create the Butterfly: Once dry, gently gather the filter at the center to form wings, and tightly wrap a pipe cleaner around the middle to hold it in place. Leave enough length on each end of the pipe cleaner to create antennae.

  5. Adjust the Wings: Finally, separate and shape the wings to fully bring your butterfly to life.
